Fact 15
Over 30 billion tons of urban sewage are discharged into lakes, rivers and oceans each year.
Fact 14
Aquatic animals have faced an estimated extinction rate five times more than that of terrestrial animals.
Fact 14
About 700 million people worldwide drink contaminated water
Fact 12
Asia has maximum numbers of polluted rivers than anywhere else in the world. Most of it contains bacteria created from human waste.
Fact 10
80% of the water pollution is caused due to domestic sewage like throwing garbage on open ground and water bodies.
Fact 9
Water pollution is the major cause of various diseases like cholera and typhoid.
Fact 8
According to UNICEF, more than 3000 children die everyday globally due to consumption of contaminated drinking water.
Fact 7
In America, 40% of the rivers and 46% of the lakes are polluted and are considered unhealthy for swimming, fishing, or aquatic life.
Fact 6
Ground water in Bangladesh is contaminated with arsenic. Arsenc is very toxic, acute poison and a carcinogen. Approximately 85% of the total area of Bangladesh has contaminated groundwater.
Fact 5
According to the WHO (World Health Organization) and United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), around 2.5 billion people do not have access to improve sanitation.
Fact 4
15 million children under the age of five die each year because of diseases caused by drinking water.
Fact 3
At least 320 million people in China do not have access to clean drinking water.
Fact 2
Around 70% of the industrial waste is dumped into the water bodies where they pollute the usable water supply.
Fact 1
Fresh water in the world is only 2.5% of the total water on this world. Make sure that the water you drink is filtered.

Preventing Water Pollution
Here are some simples tips on preventing water pollution:
- Turn off the tap when you don't need to use it, like when brushing your teeth. This helps stop water shortages and reduces the amount of contaminated water that needs treatment.
- Don't throw things out onto the streets, roads, rivers, oceans, and any other places besides a trashcan or better yet - a recycle bin. The trash can float over to the ocean, and many animals will be able to choke on it, and the different chemicals can infect the water, and many people and animals who depend on the water could catch a deadly disease from the water. Also, animals could get stuck in the trash and get sick from eating it.
- Don't throw anything toxic or any other trash that doesn't belong in the toilet or sink like paint and oil.
- Have more plants, because it prevents fertilizer, pesticide and contaminated water to enter nearby water source.
- Don't use too much pesticides or fertilizer, because it can run into water sources nearby.
- Pick up trash that you see lying around

Water Pollution Effects on the Environment
Water pollution does not only affect us, it also affects the environment and its other inhabitants.
- Heavy metals from industrial processes enter nearby lakes and rivers. These poison marine life like fish and shellfish, a common source of food for a wide variety of animals. These heavy metals then affect the entire animal food chain.
- Pollutants from sewage increase infectious diseases in different animals and plants through drinking water.
- Organic matter and nutrients increase algae and deplete oxygen in the water. This causes the suffocation of fish and other aquatic organisms.
- Our air pollution cause the oceans to grow more acidic, which damage shellfish and coral reefs.
- Suspended particles often reduce the amount of sunlight in the water, which is necessary for photosynthetic plants and micro-organisms, which many different animals depend on to survive.

Collecting Polluted Water
Many women in third world countries walk for miles, day to night, to get some of this type of filthy water for their families to drink and use. Many people now would think of it outrageous to even drink this type of water.
